A Day in the Life of a Social Media Manager

June 10, 2016

Hey y’all, happy Friday! I thought that it would be fun to share with you what a day in the life of a social media manager looks like. My day job is as a social media manager for a retail management company. Although my title is actually “marketing assistant”, I mostly focus on managing our social media and website with other various things thrown in. My job tends to vary from day to day but there are some things that I do that are the same each day. Now without further ado, a look into a day in the life of a social media manager.

A Day in the Life of a Social Media Manager

7 am – Wake up // I typically get up around 7 am on weekdays. I’m definitely not much a morning person so this is about as early as it gets. As soon as I wake up, I check social media for a few minutes before going into the restroom to start my morning skin care routine.

7:15 – Wash my face and get ready for the day // About 15 minutes after I wake up, I wash my face and prepare for the day. I am usually far too lazy to put on any makeup or do anything with my hair so I literally just wash my face, put on my outfit for the day, and brush my teeth.

7:30 – Get my lunch together // Once I have gotten ready for the day, I grab my lunch from the fridge and prepare it for the day.

7:35-8:00 – Check email and work on blog stuff // Before I leave the house I usually check both my personal and blog emails and respond to any pressing emails and also catch up on my favorite blogs until its time to head to work.

8-8:30 – Head to work // My commute is only around 30 minutes long so it’s not too bad. During the drive, I catch up on my favorite podcasts for creatives.

8:30-9 – Get settled in and check my work email // The first 30 minutes of work is typically spent catching up on emails from the night before and getting ready for the day by checking my to-do list and seeing what the most important action items for the day are.

9-10 – Work on website and schedule social media // I usually am adding new things to our site including promotions, events, and employment opportunities at least once a day if not more and like to use that time at the beginning of the day to make sure that all the promotions that are on the website are also scheduled at optimal times on our social media sites.

10-11 – Work on social media schedule // I make a completely customized social media plan each month so I try to work on each month’s plan for at least an hour every day so when it comes time to review it with my boss, I am not rushing to figure out what we’re going to post for the next month.

11-12 – Write blog post // I have recently started writing posts for my work’s blog that are posted once a week so I try to spend at least 30 minutes to an hour each day writing for the next week.

12:30-1 – Lunch // I usually take my lunch break around 12:30. During my break I will eat my lunch and scroll through my own social media sites and engage with other bloggers.

1-2 – Engage with followers on social media // I have found that our target audience is very active on social media right after lunch so that’s usually when I hop on and start engaging with them.

2-3 – Work on eNewsletter // We send out a newsletter to our tenants each week so I try to work on this a little each day so by Thursday it is ready to be reviewed by my boss.

3-4 –  Meeting with boss // I don’t meet with my boss every single day but when I do it’s typically in the afternoon. We usually meet about the website, social media, and other random marketing initiatives.

4-5 – Work on miscellaneous tasks // For the final hour of my work day I usually file files and get myself organized by making my to-do list for the next day and making sure everything’s ready to go.

I hope you enjoyed getting a little peek into a day in the life of a social media manager. What does a day in your job look like? Please feel free to let me know down in the comments.
