Today I thought it would be fitting to share some tips on how to ace your internship. Internships are essential for college students everywhere and I recommend you get one while in college to help prepare you for the real world, whether it’s just for college credit or it’s a paid gig.
How to Ace Your Internship
1. Be on time
During my internship, I always got there at least 30 minutes before my boss each day. She definitely took notice and complimented me on my punctualness. It also gave me a little free time before she got in to have a little time to myself and get prepared for the day.
2. Be organized
I can’t stress this one enough. You are going to have to juggle a lot of different tasks each day that you come into your internship so you need to be pretty organized. Whether that means keeping a to-do list or an agenda or both, do it. You won’t regret it and will be able to manage your time better when you know exactly what’s on the agenda for each and every day.
3. Be willing to do whatever your boss asks of you
Your boss may ask you to run errands for her, and if that’s the case – just smile and do it. Thankfully that wasn’t the case in my internship but I’ve heard some horror stories regarding this. So just suck it up and do what they tell you. You won’t be an intern forever and the better you cooperate, the better recommendation you will get.
4. Ask your boss for specific feedback
This is one I wish I would’ve done more often because the times that I did get specific feedback, I was able to make necessary changes to make myself a better intern and worker in general so make sure to do this as often as possible.
5. Don’t be afraid to ask questions
If you’re confused about an assignment that your boss has given you, speak up! It can only help you in the end. It’s much better to ask for a little help than to go and do the assignment wrong and then have to redo it again because you didn’t ask any questions.
